Some Highlights of 2014 Sounds like Fiction but it Isn’t!

Saying goodbye to 2014 and ringing in the new year. I like to reminisce on the past year, reflect, and be grateful for the people who I have met and the people who are in my life or just passing through.

Happy New Year ~ 新年快樂 ~ Xīn Nián Kuài Lè ~ Le Jour de l’AnFeliz Ano Novo!

Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? When reading and watching the news you have to wonder what came first. I write Science Fiction / Fantasy / Horror. Certain things caught my attention in 2014, here are some of the highlights.  Hope you enjoy if you haven’t already heard about them.

1. Smart Highways: road ways that light up and let the driver’s know when there is something blocking the highway just a head, heated to melt snow and ice for better traction, does this sound far fetch? No it has been something that engineers and scientist have been working on.

2. Self Driving Cars: we have seen them in the news, they are growing in popularity. Self driving cars are making their way to the public, Mercedes-Benz F 015 is debuting their latest as a self driving car. Google had hit the news in 2014 with their version of the self driving car.

3. Are we living in a Holographic Universe? Sounds like the movie Matrix … but this isn’t a new concept, there have been theorist toying with this idea for a long time. Some believe we now have proof that everything we are doing right now, such as reading this … we are not really here.

4. A Middle Earth! Well that’s what the Harvard scientists say. And you thought it was just lava and brimstone. Well think again.  Alright, again this is not a new concept, there have been theorist discussing this notion again for centuries. One thought comes to mind, Jules Verne Journey to the Center of the Earth.

5. Jedi Training School? Okay pack your bags Padawans, we’re moving to the UK! If I can’t go to Hogwarts I’m going to LudoSport (Light Saber Combat Academy). They have swords that mimic the lightsabers and are actually training students how to use them. How brilliant!

6. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi! Well the Aussies may be our space heroes or space guardians of Earth. Space debris that come into contact with on a daily bases is alarming. Most of it is harmless, or it knocks out the space satellites every so often. Well an Australian team is working on a project to zap orbital debris with lasers!

7. The Neuromorphic Chips …. is this the birth of Skynet? Probably not but it is a great development. The human brain is the world’s most sophisticated computer well IBM the ever ambitious unveiled in 2014 “TrueNorth” a custom-made “brain-like” chip building on their previous innovations that was released back in 2011.

8. Genome Editing? Yes, there is a host of potential in this area, to be able to  edit molecules on a cellular level to alter specific genes to treat or perhaps cure genetic diseases … just imagine the possibilities … is this something we should be doing though? Or is it something that we just have to do?

9. Drug Detecting Nail Polish. When a woman says no or she is too drunk to make a rash decision the answer is always no. This was developed by four men who wanted to empower women. However you want to look at it I think this nail polish idea is a good one. You can never take too many precautions.

10. Smart Contact Lens? Yes that’s right. Contact lens that can measure blood glucose levels for people with diabetes, so long to having to stab yourself whenever you need to take a reading! Great news for those who have diabetes.
